This article examines the crisis of the political authority between the death of Oliver Cromwell and the return of Charles II. Drawing upon examples in pamphlets dealing with the respective authority of God and the King and the possible return to a monarchy or a republic, we analyse the role of short-lived productions during that period marked by a constitutional vacancy. For example, we show how the absence of any authority results in a questioning of the interpretation of the biblical text and of some texts as well which have laid the foundations of moral ethics.Dunan-Page Anne.
