Hate crimes are some of the most vicious and fear-inducing offenses committed in the United States today. The loose definition of the term “hate crime” is a violent or menacing act committed against someone because of their association with protected characteristics such as race, religion, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Hate crimes are prosecuted at both the state and federal level. State prosecutors handle the majority of hate crime cases and interact with hate crime laws the most. If an individual is convicted of a hate crime, they are subject to harsher sentencing in the form of penalty enhancements.
