In research on abandoned villages in Basilicata, the integration of historical iconographic and descriptive sources with high-resolution digital geospatial analysis through LiDAR (Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging) and the use of drones is the methodology applied by the CNR IBAM in collaboration with the CNR-IMAA. For over a decade these studies have aimed to understand the causes and modalities of this phenomenon and to the composition of an atlas of abandoned settlements with detailed maps.
