Background & aims: The association between dietary pattern and mortality has been well studied in the general population; however, few studies have focused on the elderly. We aimed to examine the association of dietary pattern with subsequent overall mortality in elderly Japanese, and demonstrate the modifiable effect of lifestyle factors on this association. Methods: Totally 2949 Japanese community-dwelling residents aged 64 or 65 years were included in the NISSIN Project in 1996-2005.
