The substantial increase in labour market participation among older workers in the Netherlands within a short period of time and the following increase in actual retirement rates can be considered a success story, especially from a comparative European perspective. Yet, different studies also show working longer is not self-evident, in particular among workers who are bound to retire within a few years and/or low educated workers. Working longer can only be implemented successfully on a structural basis if more attention is paid to the maintenance of and renewed investment in human capital at all ages.
