Polarization is a critical parameter for understanding jet flows, as their radio to optical emission is produced by synchrotron radiation, which is naturally polarized, with the inferred magnetic field direction indicating the magnetic field direction in the emission region. Polarization has proven essential in characterizing the physics of FR I jets, where it has helped us map out their magnetic field and energetic structure and the relationship of this structure to the high-energy emission and particle acceleration. To date, high-quality HST polarimetry has been analyzed for just one FR II jet, that of PKS 1136-135.
