L’invecchiamento è definibile come un processo irreversibile che caratterizza gli organismi viventi, il quale coinvolge anche il cervello. E’ possibile distinguere tra invecchiamento “sano” e “patologico”: nel primo caso si fa riferimento al deterioramento delle aree neurali causato dall’aumentare dell’età, mentre nel secondo caso si fa riferimento ai casi, come quello della demenza, nei quali gli insulti del tessuto neurale sono causati da una malattia e portano a conseguenze più gravi.
