The old discussion of identifying Bazin’s ontology of the photographic basis of film with the notion of index by C.S. Peirce returns to the fore in relation to the new digital landscape over the last two decades. Facing this scenario that soon became saturated and reached certain nonsense, we review four authors who have distanced themselves from embedding the Bazinian ontology into semiotics, and have proposed instead other epistemological proposals to the intrinsic relationship between photography and the physical world. A review on American authors such as T. Gunning, S. Cavell and D. Morgan gives way to the Spanish J.G.
