La teoría social en la Ilustración

This article defends the interest for Sociology of the social theory of the Enlightenment, starting from an analysis based on the works of some of the most important authors of the French Enlightenment, the Scottish thinkers and Kant for the German strand. This analysis results in three proposals. First, we identify analytical perspectives developed by social theory in the 18th century: a perspective derived from the political theory of Natural Law; a dramaturgical approach; and finally an approach related to an idea of progress. Second, we identify four features shared by perspectives of that period: their historical meaning, their social realism, their sociological perspective, and their unsystematic and speculative character. Finally, we review their responses to three central questions for later sociological theory: the dialectics of agency-structure, the foundations of society, and conflict in collective social phenomena. The richness and complexity of the social theory of the Enlightenment are highlighted against alternative approaches that consider it to be nominalist and contractualist.Este artículo defiende el interés que para la sociología tiene la teoría social ilustrada y presenta una interpretación de esta a partir del análisis teórico de la obra de algunos de los autores más importantes de la Ilustración francesa, así como de algunos escoceses y de Kant en el caso alemán. Dicho análisis se traduce en tres propuestas. En primer lugar, identificamos las perspectivas desde las que se desarrolló la teoría social durante el siglo XVIII: una derivada de la teoría política iusnaturalista, otra de carácter dramatúrgico y una última vinculada a la idea de progreso. En segundo lugar, establecemos cuatro rasgos compartidos por las visiones de la época: su sentido histórico, su realismo social, la perspectiva sociológica y su carácter asistemático y especulativo. Por último, revisamos las respuestas brindadas a tres cuestiones que serían centrales para la teoría social posterior: la dialéctica acción-estructura, los fundamentos de lo social y la conflictividad de los fenómenos colectivos. Se pone así de manifiesto la riqueza y complejidad de la teoría social iluminista frente a algunas recepciones que la han considerado nominalista y contractualista
