The phytochemical sieve is a tool in the investigation of the biological and pharmacological potential that plants possess. In this paper we describe the way in which the study of the chemical compounds present in the plants can be carried out from the identification of the specific chemical groups for each bioactive molecule; special emphasis is placed on the phytochemical sieve and on the structures and generalities of a chemical group of biological interest.
