This dissertation examines and analyzes the ways in which stage directors can change an audience’s perception of Mozart’s opera Così fan tutte by using characterization. Details from four live stage recordings of the opera are analyzed with a specific focus on the effects of choices made in the performances, here termed “characterizations”, with the concept of morals and moral implications being a key component. In conclusion, stage directing is shown to play a large role in the audience’s perception of the work, fully comparable to the role of the libretto and the music
