Russian Translation of William Camden’s Britannia and the Intellectual Circle of Patriarch Nikon

The article presents an analysis of a Russian translation of a treatise Britannia by William Camden, which appeared in Russia as a part of two popular geographical world atlases. The short version of the 1600 edition became a part of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas. The translation was accomplished in Moscow, in the Ambassadorial Office, by Bogdan Lykov and Ivan (Adam) Dorn in 1637. Today it is known in numerous copies; one of those belonged to Patriarch Nikon. The comprehensive text of Britannia (the 1607 edition) as the 4th volume of the New Atlas by Blaeu was translated into the Church Slavonic language by the representative of Epifany Slavinetsky circle, one Isaja, by the order of Nikon. This text became an absolute novelty for the Russian intellectuals of the mid-17th century because of the sheer quantity of information about the British Isles as well as the antiquarian approach of Camden. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate how it was interpreted by representatives of two different schools of translation.Предметом исследования является русский перевод трактата антиквария Уильяма Кемдена «Британия». Труд Кемдена попал в Россию в составе двух популярнейших географических атласов мира. Сокращенная версия издания 1600 г. – в атласе Меркатора-Хондия, переведенном в Посольском приказе Богданом Лыковым и Иваном (Адамом) Дорном в 1637 г. и сохранившемся в многочисленных списках, один из которых принадлежал патриарху Никону. Полный текст «Британии» (издание 1607 г.) как четвертый том «Нового атласа» Блау был переведен на церковнославянский представителем круга Епифания Славинецкого старцем Исайей по заказу Никона в 1650-е – 1661 гг. Цель исследования – показать, как этот новый для русских интеллектуалов середины XVII в. по объему содержавшейся в нем информации и антикварному подходу Кемдена текст интерпретировался представителями двух разных переводческих школ
