The City of the Anthropocene: Some Problems with the Nomenclature and A Literary Example

Comunicación presentada en el Congreso Internacional Interdisciplinar "La ciudad: imágenes e imaginarios" celebrado en la Facultad de Humanidades, Comunicación y Documentación, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid del 12 al 15 marzo de 2018.The aim of my essay is to present an examination of the nomenclature concerning the current moment, i.e., the Anthropocene, the Capitalocene, and the Plantationocene, and propose a brief analysis of this current moment within the context of critical posthumanism. The differences between various names proposed to describe the current moment are covered in detail, in order to show the confusion arising from attempts at labeling it. A recent novel by Arundhati Roy, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, serves as a literary example of the problems with the current moment, and I propose a reading of the figures of human and nonhuman animals in the chosen text, focusing particularly on the representation of animal habitation in the city. The thematic scope of the chosen novel allows one to ask questions about the nature of belonging (especially in the context of the legacy of colonial domination in India), about human vulnerability, and about the possibility of expressing the pain connected with such matters. Attentive to the environment, the landscape, the flora and fauna in which human and nonhuman life is immersed, Roy’s novel undertakes the issue of responsibility for the land, questioning the nature of possession, and in doing so, it portrays animal figures that take on the meaning not just of a marginal figure or a metaphor, but rather, a reminder of a shared animality between human and nonhuman animals. The animal figures point to the limits of expression (of speech and narration), and they become a call for the recognition of other modes of being and communicating: in the case of the analyzed novel, they point to an intuition that stories of belonging to the city and dwelling in the urban landscape must necessarily be textured, spatial stories. Taking inspiration from Karen Barad and Donna Haraway, I focus on the ambivalent middle ground between the human and the nonhuman where the division between voice and voicelessness collapses, exposing the limits of vulnerability and belonging.El objetivo de mi ensayo es presentar un examen de la nomenclatura referente al momento actual, es decir, el Antropoceno, el Capitaloceno, el Plantationoceno, y proponer un breve análisis de este momento actual dentro del contexto del posthumanismo crítico. Una novela reciente de Arundhati Roy, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, sirve como un ejemplo literario de los problemas del momento actual, y propongo una lectura de las figuras de animales humanos y no humanos en el texto elegido, centrándome particularmente en la representación de habitación de animales en la ciudad. El alcance temático de la novela elegida permite formular preguntas sobre la naturaleza de pertenencia (especialmente en el contexto del legado de la dominación colonial en India), sobre la vulnerabilidad humana y sobre la posibilidad de expresar el dolor relacionado con tales asuntos. Atenta al medio ambiente, el paisaje, la flora y la fauna en que se sumerge la vida humana y no humana, la novela de Roy se ocupa de la responsabilidad de la tierra, cuestiona la naturaleza de la posesión y, al hacerlo, retrata figuras de animales que abordan el significado siendo no solo una figura marginal o una metáfora, sino más bien, un recordatorio de una animalidad compartida entre animales humanos y no humanos. Las figuras animales señalan los límites de la expresión (del habla y la narración), y se convierten en un llamamiento para el reconocimiento de otros modos de ser y de comunicación: en el caso de la novela analizada, apuntan a una intuición de que las historias de pertenencia a la ciudad y la vivienda en el paisaje urbano deben ser necesariamente historias texturizadas y espaciales. Inspirándose en Karen Barad y Donna Haraway, me concentro en el terreno ambivalente entre lo humano y lo no humano donde la división entre la voz y la falta de voz colapsa, exponiendo los límites de vulnerabilidad y pertenencia
