Besides the commitment of workers unions, it was Pierre de Coubertin who – as a defender of “sport for all” – obviously tried to achieve an easier access for workmen to sport in the early 20th Century. One of his steps to reach this goal was intrinsically tied to the idea of creating a new sport which combined disciplines that were mainly practised by people of lower social levels with those of the upper classes. Thus, with the combination of shooting, fencing, horse-riding, swimming and running, a new Olympic sport called Modern Pentathlon was born.
