When Workmen Shoot, Fence, and Ride – Modern Pentathlon and the Promise of Social Integration at the Beginning of the 20th Century

Besides the commitment of workers unions, it was Pierre de Coubertin who – as a defender of “sport for all” – obviously tried to achieve an easier access for workmen to sport in the early 20th Century. One of his steps to reach this goal was intrinsically tied to the idea of creating a new sport which combined disciplines that were mainly practised by people of lower social levels with those of the upper classes. Thus, with the combination of shooting, fencing, horse-riding, swimming and running, a new Olympic sport called Modern Pentathlon was born. By analyzing sources concerning Coubertin’s educational ideas as well as documents of the early history of Modern Pentathlon, this study is aiming to confront the ideological assurance to invent a sport of social integration with its realistic development. Due to the composition of participants it must be stated that the promise of a social mixture through Modern Pentathlon was not kept. The search for reasons of this failure gives an insight into the problems of realization and offers entirely new ways of interpretation of the true causes for the integration of a new combined sport into the Olympic program.Neben dem Einsatz von Arbeitervereinigungen war es Pierre de Coubertin, der – als ein Verfechter von „Sport für alle“ – offensichtlich versuchte, einen leichteren Zugang für Arbeiter zum Sport im frühen 20. Jahrhundert zu erreichen. Eine seiner Maßnahmen, dieses Ziel zu erreichen, war untrennbar mit der Idee verbunden, eine neue Sportart zu kreieren, welche Disziplinen, die hauptsächlich von Menschen der unteren sozialen Schichten betrieben wurden, mit denen der oberen Klassen verband. So war mit der Kombination von Schießen, Fechten, Reiten, Schwimmen und Laufen eine neue olympische Sportart, Moderner Fünfkampf genannt, geboren. Anhand einer Analyse von Quellen, die Coubertins erzieherische Ideen sowie Dokumente der frühen Geschichte des Modernen Fünfkampfs betreffen, zielt diese Studie darauf ab, die ideologische Zusicherung, einen Sport der sozialen Integration zu erschaffen, mit seiner realistischen Entwicklung zu konfrontieren. Im Hinblick auf die Zusammensetzung der Teilnehmer muss festgestellt werden, dass das Versprechen einer sozialen Mischung durch Modernen Fünfkampf nicht eingehalten werden konnte. Die Suche nach Gründen für dieses Scheitern gibt einen Einblick in die Realisierungsprobleme und ermöglicht völlig neue Interpretationswege der wirklichen Ursachen für die Aufnahme einer neuen Mehrkampfsportart in das olympische Programm.Au-delà de l’action des syndicats ouvriers, c'est Pierre de Coubertin lui-même qui – en tant que défenseur "du sport pour tous" - a explicitement tenté de favoriser l’accès des ouvriers au sport au début du 20ème siècle. L’une de ses étapes pour atteindre ce but a été étroitement liée à l'idée de créer un nouveau sport combinant les disciplines pratiquées principalement par les catégories sociales plutôt défavorisées avec celles pratiquées par les classes supérieures. Ainsi est né un nouveau sport Olympique, le Pentathlon Moderne, qui combine tir, escrime, équitation, natation et course à pied. En analysant des sources concernant les idées éducatives de Coubertin ainsi que des documents relatif à la prime histoire du Pentathlon Moderne, cette étude vise à confronter l'ambition idéologique d’une invention d’un sport facilitant l'intégration sociale avec la réalité de son développement. En raison de la composition de participants, il est clair que la promesse d'un mélange social à travers le Pentathlon Moderne n'a pas été tenue. La recherche des causes de cet échec donne un aperçu des problèmes de mise en œuvre et permet de proposer une toute nouvelle interprétation des véritables raisons de l’intégration d’un nouveau sport combiné dans le programme olympique
