Focussing primarily on ground vehicles, this chapter identifies the priority research challenges for transportation cyber-physical systems (TCPS) to be cyber-physical security, verification of cyber-physical systems and human–CPS interaction. Failure to address these challenges satisfactorily will negatively impact deployment of highly autonomous vehicles within public spaces. A variety of operational models have been proposed for autonomous vehicles, including shared mobility, which represents significant societal changes in vehicle use; research is needed into the implications of such models, which will in turn influence the regulatory environment and the application of research results. Opportunities exist for the European Union (EU)–Uni...
