Modal testing is routinely applied to tyres for the identification of structural parameters and prediction of their vibration response to excitations. The present work focuses on the more demanding case of modal testing with the aim of constructing a full mathematical model of a tyre, appropriate for use in a generic time-based simulation. For this purpose, the less common free–free boundary condition is employed for the wheel, while the tyre belt is excited in all three directions, namely radial tangential and lateral.
