Type 2 diabetes mellitus has been consistently linked with cognitive changes and an increased risk of dementia in older people. Less is known about whether diabetes affects cognition at younger ages. This meta-analysis examined the cognitive functions of middle-aged diabetic patients compared to healthy controls. Studies examining type 2 diabetes and cognition in patients under age 65 compared to healthy controls were searched in the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Science Direct, Wiley Online Library, Web of Science, Scopus, Ovid, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Academic Search Premier.
