Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death among patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM) and microvascular complications of diabetes are associated with high morbidity and diminished quality of life. Angiopoietin 2 (Ang-2) is essential for endothelial physiology and plays an important role in vascular-related diseases. Its concentration in blood is elevated in patients with T2DM in comparison to those with normal glucose tolerance and in subjects with diabetic macrovascular complications to those without them.
