Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a known hematopoietic cytokine that promotes proliferation and differentiation of neutrophil progenitors. Since G-CSF is recognized to ameliorate myocardial ischemic injury, it was projected that this effect would translate into stimulating myocardial adaptations similar to the ones promoted by ischemic preconditioning.
