Investigating the Implementation of Critical Pedagogy By In-Service English Teachers in Salatiga

For that reason, this current study attempted to investigate further to what extent have CP principles been implemented by ELT educators in their classrooms. The study focused on the activity and or the issue brought as a topic discussion by the teachers in public senior and junior high schools in Salatiga, analyzed through the lens of Akbari (2008) and Lawison et al (2008) theoretical frameworks. In collecting data, the study employed three research instruments which were questionnaire, interviews and classrooms’ observation. The results of the study showed that the teachers in this study utilized socio cultural and political issues as topic discussions in class in order to support target language teaching and learning. Furthermore, the teachers encouraged the students to think critically linked with what the students really needs in their future. The data also showed that teachers’ integrations of the implementation CP were still as the preliminary level. In this stage, the teachers taught their students in order to raise the students’ understanding about phenomena that might happen in their surroundings
