Janisse Ray is an American author whose work often grapples with the beauty, intricacy, and heartbreak of the biosphere. She has published five books of literary nonfiction, including the acclaimed Ecology of a Cracker Childhood and The Seed Underground. She has received an American Book Award and the Arlene Eisenberg Award for Writing that Makes a Difference, among many others. She holds an MFA from the University of Montana and two honorary doctorates. She has served as writer-in-residence at many universities, most recently Hollins.
