Phytochemical properties and antioxidant capacity of grape cultivars from mediterranean region in Turkey

Some phytochemical (organic acids, sugars, Vitamin C and phenolic acids) and antioxidant capacity of some local grape cultivars such as 'Dimrit', 'Agustos Uzumu', 'Tarsus Beyazi', and internationally well-known grape cultivar 'Cardinal' commercially grown in same vineyard in Mersin province located in Mediterranean Sea Region of Turkey were investigated. The organic acids, sugars, Vitamin C and phenolic acids were determined by HPLC and antioxidant capacity was measured by TEAC (Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity) assay. Significant effect of the cultivars was evident on the most of the parameters examined (p < 0.01). Among the cultivars, local cultivar 'Dimrit' had the highest citric acid (0.720 g/l), tartaric acid (14.330 g/l), malic acid (3.491 g/l) content, respectively. Local 'Agustos Uzumu' showed the highest some phenolic acids such as ferulic acid (1.113 mg/l), caffeic acid (2.107 mg/l), and vanillic acid (0.260 mg/l). The highest Vitamin C (41.15 mg/100 g) was observed in local 'Tarsus Beyazi' cultivar. 'Cardinal' contained higher contents for catechin (0.710 mg/l), quercetin (1.217 mg/l), and p-coumaric acid (0.283 mg/l). The results indicate importance of local grape cultivars in terms of bioactive content
