The present thesis aimed at investigating the relationships between the microstructure of refractories and their thermomechanical properties in order to increase their thermal shock resistance. In particular, numerical modeling were carried out in order to better understand the design of microstructure involving damages due to thermal expansion mismatch during processing. For this purpose, experimental results on simplified materials were used as reference for this numerical approach. In order to obtain quantitative results of complex phenomena, new developments of an existing discrete element modeling platform, namely GranOO, were carried out.
