With the analysis of Egyptian popular fiction movies, since the thirties, and their positioning vis-à-vis the social question (does the cinema reflect the society?), this chapter will demonstrate how cinematic and societal issues intersect and are shaped by social change in Egypt. By examining the development of different genres — primarily melodramatic, realist and action films — this chapter sheds light on the reality of social classes and discourses as practiced in different periods Egypt (Nasser, infitah, Islamism and globalization).Ce chapitre offre une présentation synthétique du cinéma égyptien, en l’abordant sous l’angle évident mais souvent ignoré des classes sociales, si structurantes en Égypte. Avec l’analyse des films populaires égyptiens de fiction depuis les années trente et leur positionnement vis-à-vis de cette question sociale (le cinéma reflète-t-il la société ?), ce chapitre démontrera comment les enjeux cinématographiques et sociétaux s’entrecroisent et prennent forme par le changement social en Égypte. En examinant le développement de différents genres cinématographiques — principalement les films mélodramatiques, réalistes et d’action — un éclairage sera offert sur la réalité des classes sociales et ses discours tels qu’ils sont pratiqués sous différentes périodes égyptiennes (nassérisme, infitah, islamisme et mondialisation)
