Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) based elastomers are used in the accessories of the underground electrical distribution network for guaranteeing the insulation of cable junctions. Indeed, the chemical structure of this apolar polymer gives the desired hydrophobicity for this application. However, in service conditions, thermo-oxidation causes an incorporation of oxygen atoms (formation of hydrophilic function) into EPDM chains.
