Although decisionmakers have recognized the benefits of autonomous mixed corp-livestock systems, the number of such farms remains small. By examining 10 mixed crop-livestock farms in the process of becoming more autonomous, we were able to identify the resources being used by farmers during this transition. In such systems, the transition towards greater autonomy involves a redefinition of what it means to be a farmer.
