Research consistently demonstrates that LGBTQ+ youth, when compared to non-LGBTQ+ youth, are at significantly greater risk for depression, anxiety, substance use, and suicidality as a result of stressors related to belonging to a minority group (Russell & Fish, 2016). Family acceptance is an important protective factor against these negative mental health outcomes, and family rejection has been demonstrated as an important risk factor.
