Has it even happened? : A study of schoolbooks regarding the wars in former Yugoslavia 1991-2001 

The purpose of the thesis is to examine how textbooks for the upper secondary school course history 1b depict the civil war in the former Yugoslavia. Five of the six books examined are aimed at the history 1b course, but all are adapted to the new curriculum GY11. The analysis of the material focuses on differences in factual content as well as what kind of use of history that has been utilized by the authors. The results shows that there are some substantial differences in terms of content regarding events and key players who were active in the war. The dates for when the conflicts started, the number of displaced people, the selected events as well as the key actors in the conflict vary significantly between the textbooks. Finally, a questionnaire survey shows that teachers around Sweden feel that they have insufficient time, which has resulted in a situation of priorities where the Yugoslav wars have almost no place in teaching
