Incertidumbre Laboral, Salud Mental y Apoyo Social en trabajadores pobres

Working poor are people who, even working, are not able to escape from the risk of poverty threshold marked by the EU. It is an increasing situation in Europe, especially relevant in the south countries. For now, we still have very little academic literature about this phenomenon in the European context, and particularly in Spain. This study analyses the well-being and the mental health in a Spanish sample of 1.541 people (working poor, workers out of the risk of poverty, and unemployed). The results show that the mental health status is equal in working poor and in unemployed people, and it is worse than in the workers out of the risk of poverty. This situation requires to reappraise the value of work in all levels: as the main social inclusion tool; as a way to construct the identity; as a source of social support, and also as a guarantee of well-being and mental health.Los trabajadores pobres son aquellos que, incluso trabajando, no logran salir de los umbrales de riesgo de pobreza marcados por organismos internacionales. Representa una situación creciente en Europa, especialmente relevante en los países mediterráneos, aunque con escasa literatura científica todavía en el contexto europeo, y particularmente en el español. Este estudio analiza el bienestar y la salud mental en una muestra de 1.541 personas (trabajadores pobres, trabajadores fuera del riesgo de pobreza y en desempleo). Los resultados muestran que el estado de salud mental de los trabajadores pobres es equiparable al de personas en situación de desempleo, y siempre peor que el de los trabajadores fuera del riesgo de pobreza. Ello obliga a reevaluar el valor del trabajo a todos los niveles: como garantía de bienestar y salud mental, como herramienta principal de inclusión social; como vía para conformar la identidad, y también como fuente de apoyo social
