El intercambio en la frontera norte de México: comercio internacional en el ámbito regional (1850-1884)

Abstract In the last three decades of the 19th century, the United States became Mexico's main trading partner. During this process, due to their geographical position, states in the north of Mexico played a crucial role that was consolidated on the basis of establishing the railroad network. This was no novelty, however, since the fact merely confirmed a relative historic trend in trade that had existed in the region since the Porfiriaro. This article analyzes trading contacts between the two countries between 1850 and 1880 approximately and after the introduction of rail-roads. The main aim is to underline, from a regional perspective, the way border cities responded to a seriesof events that transformed Mexican foreign trade during the second half of the 19th century.Resumen En las últimas décadas del siglo XIX, Estados Unidos se tornó el principal socio comercial de México. En este proceso los estados del norte mexicano, por su posición geográfica, desempeñaron un papel crucial, mismo que fue consolidado a partir del establecimiento del entramado ferrocarrilero. Sin embargo, este hecho no constituyó una novedad, más bien vino a confirmar una tendencia histórica relativa al intercambio que había existido en la región antes del porfiriato. En este artículo son analizados los contactos comerciales entre ambos países, entre 1850 y 1880 aproximadamente, y luego después de la introducción de los ferrocarriles. El objetivo central es subrayar, desde una perspectiva regional, la forma coma las ciudades fronterizas respondieron a una serie de eventos que transformaron el comercio exterior mexicano en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX
