Provocaciones en torno al cortometraje documental cubano en los años sesenta y setenta

The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC, in Spanish), created shortly after the Revolution in 1959, set out from the beginning to promote a cinema committed to the changes that were taking place. In this sense, the documentary was the appropriate model to exalt the revolutionary process underway. However, this "Cuban documentary school" did not include all the films produced in Cuba in that period. The purpose of this article is to question the ICAIC-centered approach in the study of Cuban cinema, by analyzing the circumstances, discussions and exchanges that arose in the political, cultural and cinematographic field as a result of two films that deviated from the canonical legitimation of the Revolution: PM (Sabá Cabrera Infante and Orlando Jiménez Leal, 1961) and Gente de playa (Néstor Almendros, 1961).El Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC), creado al poco tiempo de acaecida la Revolución en 1959, se propuso desde el comienzo impulsar un cine comprometido con los cambios que estaban ocurriendo. En este sentido, el modelo documental era el apropiado para exaltar el proceso revolucionario en curso. Sin embargo, esta “escuela cubana de cine documental” no englobaba todo el cine producido en Cuba por aquellos años. El propósito de este artículo consiste en poner en tensión el enfoque icaicentrista en el estudio del cine cubano a través del análisis de las circunstancias, los debates y los intercambios que suscitaron en el ámbito político, cultural y cinematográfico dos obras que se desviaban del canon legitimador del cine revolucionario: PM (Sabá Cabrera Infante y Orlando Jiménez Leal, 1961) y Gente de playa (Néstor Almendros, 1961)
