Training of teachers on classic languages: lethargy and dismay

Through a analysis of the changes in access to the profession of teacher of Classical Languages in Basic and Secondary Education, a brief summary of some of the paths traced is presented from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. The history of teacher training in Latin and Greek in Portugal hardly follows a continuous and coherent line, being evident the lack of a strategy aiming at a permanent scientifi c and pedagogical updating of these teachers. The increasing loss of status of these disciplines in the educational system and consequent reduction in the number of students leads to a quasi-lethargic state of Classical Teacher Education and to a small number of Latin and Greek Curricular students in Secondary Education.Através da análise das alterações no acesso à profi ssão de professor de Línguas Clássicas no Ensino Básico e Secundário, percorrem-se, ainda que de forma sucinta, alguns caminhos traçados desde o início do século XX até aos nossos dias. A história da formação de professores de Latim e Grego, em Portugal, difi cilmente segue uma linha contínua e coerente, sendo evidente a falta de uma estratégia visando a permanente actualização científi ca e pedagógica destes docentes. A crescente perda de estatuto destas disciplinas no sistema educativo e consequente redução do número de alunos que as frequentam levam a um estado quase letárgico da Formação de Professores de Línguas Clássicas e a um número diminuto de alunos de Latim e Grego Curriculares, no Ensino Secundário
