Seguridad y desarrollo sostenible en el Sahel: un enfoque regional

This article introduces and analyses the main threats to the stability of the Sahel region. The challenges that those countries will have to face in the short or long term are also defined, in order to develop possible solutions. The chapter raises the following question: which is the way to avoid the barriers against security and further development of the region? The main goal is to find solutions to support the sustainability of development and security in the Sahel. The purpose is achiveable in the region. There are major obstacles, but nationals from Sahel countries deserve the right of human dignity and of a life without insecurities, without poverty and without violence. The paper first defines the concept of security and development. Then, the crucial factors and characteristics of the Sahel region are described and analyzed. The paper continues with the study of the risks and threats surrounding the future of the States in the region and concludes with some proposals to improve the living standards in the Sahel.En este trabajo se analizan algunas de las amenazas principales que afectan a todos los países de la región, en mayor o menor medida. Además, se definen los retos que deberían afrontar los países en el corto y largo plazo tratando de formular posibles soluciones. Para ello el capítulo plantea la siguiente pregunta: ¿de qué manera se pueden superar las barreras que frenan la seguridad y el desarrollo en el Sahel? El objetivo consiste en encontrar y describir posibles soluciones para fomentar el desarrollo y la seguridad de manera sostenible en el Sahel. Se pretende demostrar que la seguridad y el desarrollo son posibles en el Sahel. Evidentemente, existen grandes obstáculos, pero los nacionales de los países del Sahel tienen derecho a un nivel de vida digno exento de inseguridades, hambre y violencia. Para ello, este trabajo define en primer lugar lo que se entiende por seguridad y desarrollo y delimita los países que van a formar parte del análisis. En segundo lugar, se describen y estudian los principales factores que caracterizan a la región del Sahel. En tercer lugar, se describen los principales riesgos y amenazas que atormentan el futuro de los países para finalmente establecer respuestas y posibles propuestas basadas en la experiencia y en la voluntad de mejorar la calidad de vida en el Sahel
