In the fight against global warming, the importance of renewable heating technologies is growing rapidly. In Finland, approximately one third of the final energy demand goes to space heating. Currently, coal is used for heat production in several Finnish cities, but the state has forbidden the use of coal for heat production from 2029 onwards. In order to examine other alternatives than simply converting coal plants to use biomass, this thesis explores renewable heating technologies for district heating which do not require combustion. Altogether twelve expert interviews are conducted, revealing deep insight into the current state and possible future development of district heating. The findings from the interviews are used for a case study...
