Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common lethal autosomic recessive disorder among Caucasian population. It is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane conductance Regulator (CFTR) protein, a cAMP-regulated chloride channel expressed at the apical surface of epithelial cells. The most common CF-causing mutation is a deletion of phenylalanine 508 (F508del, present in 85% of CF patients) and leads to CFTR misfolding which is recognized by the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) quality control (ERQC) resulting in ER retention and degradation.
