In this essay we give a sufficient background to, and prove, the classical Bing-Nagata-Smirnov metrization theorem. Thus we show that a topological space is metrizable if, and only if, it is regular and has a countably locally finite basis. As a corollary of this we also prove Smirnov's metrization theorem
