The Motives behind the Prescribed English Text-Book: When English rings a bell

Many countries including Indonesia put their consideration on the benefits of textbooks in ELT classrooms. The prescribed English textbook is published by Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture is developed to achieve the objectives of ELT stated in K13 (Curriculum 2013). This article aims to examine the motives behind the production of the prescribed English textbook by the Indonesian government. The result indicates that cultures are the main motives. The authors of this textbooks may want to focus on building students’ character to be more nationalistic, being proud of Indonesian rich cultural heritages and the country rich biodiversity. However, Indonesian government through its authors need deliberately to teach the flexibility toward different conditions of students in this country
