THE PROBLEMS IN LEARNING ESP SPEAKING SKILL BY HOTEL MANAGEMENT STUDENTS AT SMKN 01 BATU

Speaking is one of the most important skills for EFL learners to be developed. In addition, ESP is defined as a language course of an instruction with the purposes is set by the specific needs of a particular group of learners, and it is very important because it has been specific support students’ learning English for a certain area. However, there are a lot of problems that students faced in learning ESP Speaking. The study focuses on the problems that students face, the causes of the problems and also the solutions to overcome the problems. This study is a qualitative research using case study design. The object of this study was undertaken at Vocational High School 01 Batu. The research data were undertaken from the students and the instruments in this research used observation and interview to collecting the data. The result of this study shows that there are four problems that students face in learning ESP Speaking such as feeling worried about making mistakes, feeling shy, having low self-confidence, and having low motivation. In addition, the causes of the problems are difficult to express the words, afraid of their speaking skill, do not want to look foolish, afraid of being laugh, prefer to keep silent; there are different treatment from the teacher to the students who fluency in speaking skill than others, etc. Moreover, this study also gained the solutions from the students to overcome their problems such as: building a good emotion and condition between students and teacher, accepting critics and suggestions, keeping practice, etc
