THE PREFERRED ACCENT IN LEARNING LISTENING SUBJECT EMPLOYED BY 5TH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ELED AT UMM

Listening has an important role in learning English accent, as accent is a unique way of speaking language. Every people have their own accent but there are two most favorable accents to learn such as American and British accents. The formulated aims of this current research are to investigate the 5th semester students preferred accent in learning listening subject material and their reasons in preferring certain accents in learning listening subject material. This research was using quantitative and followed by a qualitative method. The subject of this research was the 5th semester students who already took the last listening subject. Questionnaire is used as the instruments to collect the data of the student's preferred accent and their reasons. Then, the researcher proceeds with interview for a richer answer for the student’s reason. This research resulted that the 5th semester students tended to prefer American accent than British in learning listening material. From a total of 30 students, 80.00% of students agree and 20.00% of students disagree to prefer American accent for the listening material. Then, only 26.67% of students agree and 73.33% of students disagree to prefer British accent for the listening material. The reasons that made the students prefer certain accents to listen are easier to understand, sounds more well educated, clearer to listen, more familiar, frequently given by the lecturer and teacher on the material, and movie accent
