Listeria monocytogenes is a facultative intracellular pathogenic bacterium responsible for a serious disease, listeriosis. Although much work has been done to characterize the virulence mechanisms of this bacterium, there is little data on the mechanisms leading to the asymptomatic carriage of L. monocytogenes in mammalian hosts. One of these mechanisms could be a phase of intracellular persistence. During prolonged infections of human epithelial cells in culture, such as hepatocytes and trophoblast cells, L. monocytogenes changes its intracellular lifestyle.
