La métaphore de la cire : réutilisation d’un motif platonicien (Théétète, 191-195) à Rome

International audienceIn the Theaetetus, the metaphor of wax illustrates the defective coincidence between what we perceive and what we remember; the imprint left by the seal, both a medium for, and a content of memory, expresses the reality of the perceived object or the gap between perception and reality. For the Roman writers, the image retains an epistemological dimension, linked to empiricism and a cognitive analysis of perceptions; it appears thus in Cicero, who nonetheless bends its philosophical perspective in order to use it as an anti-Stoic argument, by denouncing the limits of our senses to establish a criterion for distinguishing between different perceptions. But the metaphor is mostly used in the artes memoriae, as an analysis of the memory process. In Rhetorica ad Herennium or in Cicero, a shift occurs in its meaning in relation to the Platonic dialogue: what matters is not the imprint in the wax but the loci, the surface onto which the orator stamps his imagines, his speech. The loci are stamped onto the soul, unlike imagines, which are meant to be erased and replaced with other words with each new speech that is learnt. Quintilian draws the consequences of this reversal: although one uses associative memory to remember the couple loci / imagines, yet the ordo of loci isn’t stamped anywhere and the method calls for another step in the memorizing process, which acts as a new filter between the subject of memory and the memory of the orator.Dans le Théétète, la métaphore de la cire illustre la coïncidence fautive entre ce que l’on perçoit et ce dont on se souvient ; l’empreinte laissée par le sceau, à la fois support et contenu du souvenir, exprime la réalité de l’objet perçu ou le décalage par rapport à cette réalité. À Rome, l’image garde une dimension épistémologique, liée à l’empirisme et au caractère cognitif de l’analyse des perceptions ; elle se retrouve ainsi chez Cicéron, qui infléchit néanmoins sa perspective philosophique pour en faire un argument anti-stoïcien, dénonçant les limites de nos sens pour établir un critère de distinction entre différentes perceptions. Mais la métaphore apparaît surtout dans les artes memoriae, comme analyse du processus mémoriel. S’effectue dans la Rhétorique à Hérennius ou chez Cicéron un déplacement par rapport au dialogue platonicien : ce qui importe n’est plus la trace imprimée dans la cire mais bien les loci, le support sur lequel l’orateur grave ses imagines, son discours. Les loci s’impriment dans l’âme, à la différence des imagines, appelées à être effacées et remplacées par d’autres mots à chaque nouvel apprentissage de discours. Quintilien tire les conséquences de ce renversement : si l’on fait appel à la mémoire associative pour se remémorer le couple loci / imagines, en revanche l’ordo des loci, lui, n’est gravé nulle part et suppose une seconde opération de mémorisation, un nouveau filtre entre l’objet du souvenir et la mémoire de l’orateur
