A review of theories and methods for assessing the strength of earth structures is given in the paper. A number of criteria is proposed that makes it possible to reliably assess the strength of earth structures. The strength of the Gissarak dam under the influence of mass forces is estimated taking into account inhomogeneous features of the structure, the strength of the Nurek dam near the resonance regimes is assessed considering for viscoelastic properties of soil and inhomogeneous structural features under various dynamic impacts
