International audienceToday, there is a new light is on the research on the mummification processes used by embalmers in ancient Egypt, thanks to modern analysis techniques. These substances, of mineral, animal or vegetable origin, played both an important practical and symbolic roles in the composition of balms used for the preservation of the skin and so in the preservation of the whole body. Thus, these balms allowed the passage of the deceased of the earthly life to eternal life. A multidisciplinary analysis was performed, involving macroscopic observation, microscopic examination, computed tomography and physicochemical analysis.
