Rainfed agriculture contributes about 40% of food grain production in the country. Over 87% of coarse cereals and pulses, 77% of oilseeds and 65% of cotton are cultivated under rainfed farming. Farmers in these regions are generally resource poor, soils are degraded and high risk deters them in quick adoption of improved technologies.
