The green revolution, that dramatically chnaged the face of irrigated agriculture, largely bypassed the rainfed areas. Rainfed agriculture contributes about 40% of food grain production in the country. Over 87% of coarse cereals and pulses, 77% of oilseeds and 65% of cotton are cultivated under rainfed farming. Farmers in these regions are generally resource poor, soils are degraded and high risk deters them in quick adoption of improved technologies. To address the issues of rainfed agriculture in a focused manner, the Indian Council of Agricultural research(ICAR) established the central Research Institute for dryland Agriculture(CRIDA) in 1985 at Hyderabad to undertake basic and strategic research for improving the productivity of rainfed regions. CRIDA also has the responsibility of providing technical backstopping to the network programmes on rain fed agriculture and agro-meteorology.Not Availabl
