Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kepentingan nasional Jepang yang tercapai melalui diplomasi cosplaynya terhadap Indonesia. Studi ini menggunakan konsep budaya populer, soft power yang dikemukakan oleh Joseph S. Nye, dan kepentingan nasional untuk menjelaskan kepentingan yang dicapai oleh Jepang melalui diplomasi cosplaynya terhadap Indonesia.
