The social and economic value for the domestic seeds according to the farmers in the south of The West Bank

Abstract: This study was conducted during 2010- 2012 where the sample represented the farmers from the villages of Halhoul, Surif, Alkhadir and Wadi Fukin. The study sample was random sample represented by 162 female and male farmers where the sample was randomly selected.Twenty farmers and domestic seeds experts were interviewed. The study mainly aimed to recognize the economical and social value of the domestic seeds according to the farmers, and identify the obstacles facing the spread of the domestic seeds among the farmers. The researcher used two methodologies of descriptive and analytical approaches. The data was gathered and tested according to the hypotheses based on the previous literature that were reviewed, critically analyzed and processed the outputs of the surveys using the SPSS program. The result of the study had shown that there is an economical value for the domestic seeds, where the farmer according to their answers in the survey had registered an arithmetic mean of 4.2 regarding the farmers' ability to gather and store the domestic seeds for the following season. This is because the domestic seeds showed resistance of the diseases and pests. Moreover, the seeds are easy to trade with . The interviewed experts had answered with a percentage of 90% that there exist an economical value for the domestic seeds and confirmed that its usage decreases any other expenses and increases the income of the farmer and consumer as product, also it's considered resisting to the diseases and the pests and endures droughts. Moreover, 10% of the interviewee had refused to use the domestic seeds because they are seasonal and not able to compete with the improved seeds. The results had showed that there is a social value for the domestic seeds, where when it was ranked in descending order based on its importance it obtained the highest arithmetic mean of 4.55 of the farmers choosing to plant the domestic seeds because the special taste of its fruits , they're able to store the fruits and keep it. Also its related to the agricultural heritage in the area. According to the experts 95% of them answered that the domestic seeds helps to enhance the social relations among the farmers through its production and its د marketing, having seasonal exhibitions and the entire family participate in the production process so it's considered a cultural social heritage. Regarding the obstacles to the spread of the domestic seeds, the results showed the limited local and international financial support of researches to improve the domestic agriculture. Moreover, no financial supports nor facilitated loans for farmers using domestic types. The study had showed that opening the Palestinian market to the Israeli products and the availability of huge amounts of genetic modified seeds had contributed in the loss of the types of the domestic seeds.The interviewees had assured the above mentioned obstacles and added new and many other obstacles existing in the current context .The results had shown that using the domestic seeds is profitable in all kinds of vegetables except for the wheat crops , where for each dunum all the vegetables exceeded 1000 NIS of profit which is considered efficient and profitable specially if the the area cultivated is large. the farmers tend to plant the wheat for the household consumption and for livestock. In the end of the study the researcher had presented some suggestions and recommendations to enhance and sustain the usage of the domestic seeds through a public organization that improves, produce the domestic seeds, monitor the process and collecting data and experiences available of the farmers. The data collected should be verified systematically to be considered as sound and reliable data. Furthermore, the farmers should be supported financially with big-scale projects that serves the farmers themselves focusing on the domestic seeds agriculture. Seasonal agricultural exhibitions should be held in each area of Palestine according to its agricultural nature. Training courses should be conducted for the farmers and agronomists continuously depending on the seasons and focusing on the importance of the domestic seeds usages. And finally establishing agricultural local associations and organisations specialized in local agriculture by the farmers themselvesالملخص: أجريت هذه الدراسة خلال الفترة (2010-2012 (حيث مثل مجتمع الدراسة جميع المزارعين في قرى (حلحول، صوريف، الخضر، واد فوكين) أما عينة الدراسة فجاءت عينة عشوائية بسيطة لتمثل (162 (مزارع ومزارعة، اختيرت بالطريقة العشوائية، وتم مقابلة (20 (مهندس زراعي وخبير بالبذور البلدية، وهدفت الدراسة بشكل رئيسي إلى التعرف على القيمة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية للبذور البلدية من وجهة نظر المزارعين، وتحديد معيقات إنتشار البذور البلدية. وقد استخدمت الباحثة في إنجاز هذا البحث المنهج الوصفي وتحليل البيانات، وقامت بجمع المعلومات، وإختبار الفرضيات بالاستعانة بمراجعة الأدبيات السابقة ومعالجتها بالنقد والتحليل، وتم تصميم إستمارة للمزارعين، وإستمارة مقابله شخصية للخبراء والمهندسين، وإستمارة لدراسة هامش الربح لبعض الأصناف التي تم إختيارها من قبل الباحثة، كما قامت بتحليل ومعالجة مخرجات الاستمارات إحصائيا بواسطة حزمة (SPSS (الإحصائية. قد أظهرت نتائج الدراسة انه توجد قيمة اقتصادية للبذور البلدية حيث أجاب المزارعون بأعلى متوسط حسابي(28.4 (بانه بإمكان المزارعين جمع وتخزين البذور البلدية للموسم القادم، و أنها تقاوم الأمراض والآفات، وأيضا تعتبر البذور البلدية سهلة التداول والشراء وأكدوا على أن البذور المستوردة تحتاج إلى مبالغ إضافية، أما الخبراء المقابلون أجابوا وبنسبة 90 %بأنه توجد قيمة اقتصادية للبذور البلدية وأكدوا على أن استخدامها يقلل من النفقات الإضافية وتزيد من الدخل وهي مصدر للمزارع والمستهلك كمنتج اقتصادي وتعتبر مقاومة للأمراض و الآفات ومتحملة للجفاف، و10%من المقابلين رفضها لأنها موسمية، ولعدم منافستها للبذور المحسنة. أظهرت النتائج انه توجد قيمة اجتماعية للبذور البلدية حيث رتبت بشكل تنازلي حسب الأهمية وبأعلى متوسط حسابي(55.4 ،(التشجيع على زراعة البذور البلدية من قبل المزارعين، تميز ثمارها بالطعم المميز وامكانية تخزينها والمحافظة عليها حيث أنها ترتبط بالتراث الزراعي للمنطقة، ومن وجهة نظر الخبراء أجاب 95 %أنها تعمل على إيجاد علاقات اجتماعية بين المزارعين من حيث إنتاجها وتسويقها، وتتشارك الأسرة بكاملها في موسم الزراعة، وتقام معارض موسمية، وتعتبر موروث إجتماعي ثقافي . أما بالنسبة إلى معيقات انتشار البذور البلدية فقد أظهرت النتائج أن محدودية الدعم المالي المحلي والدولي لبحوث تطوير الزراعات البلدية، وأيضا لا يوجد دعم مالي وقروض لمزارعي الأصناف البلدية وبينت الدراسة أن فتح الأسواق التجارية وتوفر كميات كبيرة من البذور المهجنة ساهم في ضياع الأصناف البلدية، وأكد المقابلون على هذه المعيقات وأضافوا معيقات ومهددات جديدة وكثيرة . ح تبين من نتائج دراسة هامش الربح لزراعة دونم من البذور البلدية أنها مربحة في أغلب الخضار ما عدا القمح حيث أن كمية الربح للدونم الواحد في جميع الخضروات تجاوزت الألف شيكل وهي كمية مقبولة للمزارع خاصة إذا كانت مساحة مزروعاته كبيرة، أما بالنسبة للقمح فكان هامش الربح لا يتجاوز المائة شيكل وبذلك يكون القمح غير مجدي اقتصاديا وبالرغم من ذلك يقوم المزارع الفلسطيني بزراعته لأنه لا يحتاج إلى عمليات خدمة كثيرة، وللمساعدة بالأمن العذائي للاسرة وكأعلاف للحيونات. وفي نهاية الدراسة قامت الباحثة بتقديم بعض المقترحات والتوصيات حيث قسمت الباحثة التوصيات الى عدة اقسام توصيات على مستوى الوزارات وتوصيات على مستوى المؤسسات وتوصيات على مستوى المزارعين لتعزيز واستدامة استخدام البذور البلدية، إيجاد مؤسسة وزارية لتحسين وإنتاج البذور البلدية، ومراقبتها وجمع المعلومات المحلية والخبرات المتوفرة لدى المزارعين والتحقق من المعلومات بشكل مدروس وتطوير المعلومات واعتمادها كمعلومات سليمة وموثوقة، دعم المزارعين ماديا بمشاريع موسعة تؤول إلى خدمة المزارع والتركيز من خلال هذه المشاريع على الزراعة البلدية، عقد دورات تدريبية للمزارعين حول الزراعة البلدية وأهميتها ودورها في تنمية الاقتصاد الوطني، إقامة المواسم والمعارض الزراعية في كل منطقة حسب طبيعة الزراعة المتوفرة فيها، تنظيم دورات تدريبية للمزارعين والمهندسيين الزراعين باستمرار حسب المواسم وتوضيح أهمية البذور البلدية، عمل جمعيات ومؤسسات زراعة محلية تعنى بشؤون الزراعة المحلية من قبل المزارعين أنفسهم
