To Mend the Matter to Cultivate Sympathy: On Vulnerable Walls and Expressive Surfaces

This essay discusses the unstable condition of architectural matter, by focusing on the building surfaces that have undergone visible transformations. I explore buildings as vulnerable yet resilient comings-together of matter, to foreground their architectural impermanence and to acknowledge buildings-in-making and buildings-in-degradation as primary architectural conditions. The investigatio is based on new materialist literature from anthropology, geography, and archaeology, and focuses on the surfaces of buildings as primary sites of investigation. Using architect Lars Spuybroek's "sympathy of things" as a main conceptual framework, I argue that architectural matter has a way of sticking together and continually rearranging itself, through a process of mending. The paper therefore proposes to investigate mending as a care-full form of gathering of built matter whereby buildings show their scars, patches, and material becomings. Two specicific building surfaces have been invesigated in Taly and Lebanon, to uncover their mends and argue for the pursuit of an instinctive resonance with built matter, an architectural kinship, and a renewed praise for the generous offerings of architectural surfacesEste artículo cuestiona el estado inestable de la materia arquitectónica a través de superficies de edificios que han sufrido transfromaciones visibles. Los edificios se perciben como construcciones vulnerables como uniones resilientes de materias para resaltar la naturaleza transitoria de la arquitectira y reconocer los procesos de creación y degradación como condiciones arquitectónicas primarias. La investigación aquí presentada recoge ideas del nuevo materialismo en antropología, geografía y arquelogía. El espacio rincipal de investigación es la superficie del edificio. Usando como marco conceptual la "empatía de las cosas" (sympathy of things) de Lars Spuybroek, este artículo argumenta que la materia arquitectónica, a través de procesos de reparación, posee formas de agregación y continua autoorganización. Este artículo, por tanto, propone investigar la reparación (mending) como una manera para unir la materia construida, llena de cuidado y cariño, a través de la cual el edificio muestra sus cicatrices, parches y devenires materiales. Dos superficies, una en Italia y otra en Líbano, han sido investigadas para descubrir sus reparaciones y defender la búsqueda instintiva de resonancias con la materia construida, de un parentesco arquitecttónico y de una renovada alabanza a los generosos ofrecimientos de las superficies arquitectónicas
