Atomic layer deposition (ALD) coating on active material particles has been widely considered as an effective and efficient strategy to improve the capacity and cycle life of lithium-ion batteries. One of the key roles of the ALD coating layer is to facilitate the Li ion transfer in electrode particles. Several recent studies demonstrated that an ALD coating layer could significantly improve the effective diffusion coefficients in cathode particles. As such, this enhanced transport property is generally believed to be a result of the higher conductivity of the coating layer itself when compared to that of active materials.
