The method for calculating the spinodal of the liquid phase at negative pressures by the generalized van der Waals equation was refined. The spinodal for argon was calculated. The calculation results were compared with the values obtained within the framework of the theory of formation of vapor nuclei at negative pressures. The limiting tensile strength at the triple point was calculated for Ar, Kr, Xe, N2, H2O, NH3, Hg, and Cs
