[eng] Invasive species are one of the main factors that impact or alter the functioning of marine ecosystems. Despite the negative effects that they can have on local communities, depending on the trophic level where native organisms are, invasive species could have beneficial effects on certain organisms. The invasive seaweed Halimeda incrassata, discovered in 2011 in Mallorca and being an ecosystem engineer, could induce some important changes on ecosystem functioning, by stabilizing the substrate, competing with native macrophytes or providing a new source of habitat and food to native fauna.
